Votes on council tax rises

Give residents in Yeovil a veto to stop council tax rises says Kevin Davis

Council tax hikes should be put to a vote say Conservatives

Local residents across Yeovil will be given new powers to stop high council tax increases, under proposals announced by Conservatives.

In a new initiative on council tax launched by David Cameron, and welcomed this week by Kevin Davis, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, any local authority - including fire and police authorities - that wanted to introduce a high council tax increase would have to receive the support of local people in a referendum. Council tax bills have soared across the country under Labour. In Yeovil, overall bills have risen by 97% since 1997, from £690 to £1,361 on a Band D home.

Under the proposed plans, the local authority would have to explain to taxpayers why they wanted to raise taxes by so much and they would have to show what they would do – a shadow budget – in the event of their plans being rejected. Tax referendum ballots would be sent out with the annual council tax bill. If people voted against the high rise, the rebate would be credited to them at the end of the year, to avoid the cost of posting out new bills.

In addition to the plans for direct democracy, Conservatives have pledged to:

  • Relieve councils of the unfunded burdens, regulations, inspection and red tape that have forced up council tax, through decentralisation and deregulation.

  • Give councils more freedom and discretion to fund their own local priorities not Whitehall's, ending the ring-fencing of local authority budgets.

  • Give power back to local people, such as through the abolition of the unelected and unwanted regional assemblies, allowing more local discretion on planning and licensing, and introducing directly elected police commissioners.

  • Scrap Labour's ongoing plans for a council tax revaluation in England, and abolish council tax inspectors' rights of entry into people's homes.

Kevin Davis said:

"Council tax has become so unpopular under Labour because of the year on year rises that have been cooked up by Gordon Brown, not helped by the reckless spending of the Lib Dems. We need to end Labour's fiddled funding and burdens which have forced up councils' costs. Local councils deserve more freedoms.

"But these new powers need to be backed up with a stronger voice for local people, so they have the final say on whether or not local taxes are going to rise and have control over what the Lib Dem run Council does to local services. We need to replace state control with social responsibility and democratic accountability."

  1. Funny - I don't remember you ever asking the residents of Kingston about the massive council tax rises you imposed as Leader of the Council.

Your Somerset readers may be interested to know about Kevin Davis's record on Council Tax:

He stood on a platform of 'keeping council tax rises to the level of inflation'
He and his colleagues put the Council Tax up by 50% in just four years - four times the level of inflation
He was Leader of Kingston Council the year band D council tax rose over £1,000
He voted for the highest council tax level in London in 2006.

He and his colleagues then denied any culpability, claiming they hadn't run the council for more than 10 years - despite claiming more than £250,000 between them in 'special responsibility allowances'.

Not surprisingly Mr Davis was thrown out by local people as a result of this record.

Why should anyone believe him now?

  2. Spreading the same old poisonous lies I see.

The period to which the gentleman refers is one when almost all the council tax rises were imposed by the Lib Dems, in cahoots with the Labour party. Every attempt to reduce Council Tax was voted down by the Lib Dems - we even tried to sell off buildings they are now, this year, proposing to sell themselves now they have control.

The Conservatives have not had a majority on Kingston Council since 1994. It is a fact that any fool can see by checking the BBC website. The Lib Dems liked to pretend that somehow because we were a minority administration, trying to do the best for the Borough, that somehow we were in control. Nothing could be done that was not approved of by the Lib Dems. The records show this but it is not convenient for this gentleman to hear this.

The record clearly shows this was a period of "No overall control" where the Conservatives attempted to run a minority administration.

The Lib Dems were paid the same level of allowances during this period - allowances that were voted through by them with the Conservatives. The records show this if you can be bothered to read them.

Still, Lib Dem Lies have become a feature of the new nasty party and you would have expected them to have learnt that no one is listening to them.

  3. Oh, and I forgot, the highest Council Tax rise eve imposed on the Borough - over 15% in one year - was imposed by.... a Lib Dem Council 5 years ago!
