Mandelson spins for Brown
Lord Mandelson is a slippery character and I shivered when I heard he was returning to Government as his brand of spin and scheming had been the one element that had entirely disappeared from the Brown Government. Interestingly, the attempts at spin were still there it was just that Brown and his comrades were dreadful at the art. A classic example was the recent Brown view that if we go on giving factually incorrect figures then eventually every one will believe what we are saying. This had worked as a tactic when Brown was Chancellor but as we discovered this week, when he got caught out lying about Conservative spending plans and spinning how he would make spending grow when this was not the case.
But what of Mandelson? Well, this morning the papers are full of Mandy spinning that Brown is likely to face a new challenge at the party conference if he does not improve in the polls.
Call me cynical - i know you will - but isn't that just plain, unvarnished, spinning?
By making this announcement Mandelson has now opened up a position where IF Brown is not challenged (which is the highly likely outcome) then Mandy will, at that time, spin about how secure Brown's position now is because the expected challenge (which was actually only Mandy's story in the first place) has now receded - presumably "because he is doing such a good job". If the challenge does happen then no one will be surprised and there is more of a chance of playing the challenge down as something we expected all along.
Positioning? Spin? Whatever you call it the Conservatives need to be careful because after this reshuffle it is now clear that Mandelson is controlling the whole Government's news management agenda and they better get used to more of this.
