Party conference – morning 1
Image via Wikipedia
First day of the party conference and what do I hope for – as ever, instead of three things I had to add a fourth:
- I am one of those who does not think the party needs to spell out a shopping list of cuts but merely needs to make the electorate understand that the cuts are likely to be painful and yet the future can be brighter as we trim back the spending of the overly bureaucratic state
- I think we need to give a clear indication of how we intend to reform the constitution and trim back the political state
- We need to help Lib Dem voters understand that we can offer them a vision that they can vote for
- Finally, I think there is a real need to give people a clear vision that is totally different to the bitterness we saw from the Labour party last week. Their conference almost ran out of targets to attack. As for the Lib Dems, we have to learn that we cannot, like them, come away from Manchester with the electorate more confused about what we are stand for than we did when we went into the conference.
