If you click on recent posts "August 2011 on" it works just the same as this site. You can put any comment you wish and respond to others likewise. And you can use "control-F" to search. If you put something elsewhwere on the site, you can refer people to it in the recent posts. If Hedley is happy to take control, then let Kevin Davis redirect this site to the new one.

Along with Dave I like the linear and anarchistic nature of this stream of comment, and simple text search seems to work fine for me. I also agree that Hedley has done a lot of work to organise things, when clearly something is needed to guarantee the longevity of this pool of recollections.

It looks like to comment on the new site I have to choose a topic or thread; I can't join in with the linear flow. I'm not convinced that there are enough diverse threads to make that work, as the rambling nature makes it attractive to throw something in the pot, commenting on several hot issues and digressing as the whim takes me.

If it were possible to preserve the linear flow and have the aid of a search tool for those who think it needs one it would be great (after all, that works for the whole world wide web!)

The other problem is the wholesale switch that's needed. It looks like Kevin Davis is happy to redirect things, no doubt he'd be keen to slay this behemoth. Until then the split in comments could stifle the thing.

I'd say ultimately its up to Hedley as he has the will to make the new scheme work. It's all about "making it happen".

Dave says "...I suppose we have to move on...". I guess that contributors will determine whether or not Hedley's initiative will take off since the web is essentially an anarchic space - yes, even for (very) ex-grammar school boys! - and people will continue to do what they prefer.

While I appreciate and admire what Hedley has done with his website i do find the Kevin Davis site( many many thanks Kevin -bet you didn't know what you were unleashing --bit like victor frankenstein really -except your creation won't bite you!!)--has an anarchistic rolling randomness about that I find appealing. However if I do want to find something "control f" seems to work -but I suppose we have to move on. Could the correspondence be left in the same format we have now with the addition of the extra sections Hedley has added?

Hedley - I agree with Robert and think your site looks great. I suppose I'm chuffed because you quote one of my contributions here on your "About" page!

My only query would be his - how can people add material to the site? Although this ("Kevin Davis")thread is fascinating the problem is it has no structure (unlike your site). It just goes on and on. So you can't find anything that might be interesting without scrolling on forever. I'm not sure how you could avoid that on the new site. The only ways I could think of as the owner of a couple of WordPress blogs myself would be to EITHER post subjects yourself on the appropriate page, stuff you want to discuss and/or suggestions made by readers (you could do this by having a "Contact" page where people can suggest topics) OR letting other people draft posts via the dashboard directly even though you own the site and could approve draft posts. Another small suggestion would be to enable "Comments" on most of your pages, which will give people other avenues to contribute.

I hope you know what you've let yourself in for!

Hi Rob
This Davis blog is a 'swarm' of comments and comments on comments on Kevin Davis original post in 2007. All I have done is set up a more permanent blog where I have copied over all comments for May 2007 to June 2011, July 2011 and then entered a post of my own for August 2011. If you scroll down to the bottom of that posting you can click on Comments to read any already there (2 at the last count) and add a comment of your own, and off we go again. So we couldn't post on the Davis blog but we could comment ad infinitum (sometimes ad nauseam!) - we can do the same on the new blog. Try it and see ...
I have just set up the other static pages to enable to collect lots of scattered material into one site - still a lot to do ...
The 'Eutectic Wallblock' intrigues me....

Hedley: congratulations on a brilliantly constructed site. I can't wait to see 'long lost' copies of 'The Surbitonian' there. I'll be able to reaquaint myself with 'The Case of the Eutectic Wallblock' and see whether I think it's as side-splitting now as it was in 196?.
Only one immediate question: I assume there is a restriction as to who can 'post' on the new site - the advantage of the old one was that it was a stream of comments. I'm not sure how you propose this is transferred to the new format.
BTW I admire your courage in proposing an alternative and doing the work - some will no doubt criticise the fact that it loses the spontaneity and 'stream of consciousness' of the previous format - you're right, something had to be done to preserve what had become a valuable archive.
